Dating Deal Breakers!

Revealing secrets: Men and women share what made them decide to drop a sweetie.

By Susan Hayden

veryone has their breaking point in relationships. That point when you say, “Hey, you’re great, but it’s just not worth this.” For some, it’s a major screw up. For others, it’s a minor irritation that they just can’t get past.

Here’s what a sampling of men and women identified as their top dating deal

breakers (in no particular order) and what they had to say about them:

Men said:
Being over-emotional: “Although I totally understand that women are by nature more emotional, my date or girlfriend has to be able to roll with the punches and not sweat the small stuff,” said Rick, 34.

Ignorance: So some men don’t like dumb women!

Lying: I assume they’re not talking about little lies.

Lack of social skills: “I don’t mind relaxing at home or mellowing out from time to time, but she has to be comfortable at, and like going to, parties or out with a group. For me, one of the biggest benefits of being in a relationship is having someone to share in your adventures and who enjoys going out with people to places you’ve never been before,” said Danny, 28.

Smoking: “I work hard at living healthy. I couldn’t be with someone who doesn’t feel the same way. Breathing someone’s secondhand smoke all the time would just negate all the effort I put toward my own

health, and I couldn’t sacrifice that, no matter how incredible the woman was,” said Charles, 32.

Ugly feet: Believe it or not, one guy actually couldn’t get past his date’s ugly feet. I guess he’s a foot man.

Jealousy: This is a big one for guys. “A woman who gets jealous of every female I talk to — or even pass on the street — is a big turn off," said Rick.

Infidelity: “Even if you can forgive, the pain and lying continue to haunt the victimized spouse—even years after the experience. It would be better if he or she could come forward right away and just ask for a divorce rather than trying to have your cake and eat it, too," said Charles.

Women said:
Lack of affection: One woman found it a struggle getting her significant other to just cuddle on the couch. May not be the end of the world, but everyone needs to be touched from time to time.

Not actively participating in child rearing: Single mothers need guys who can — and want to — help!

Possessiveness: “When someone tries to control you, you become defensive and it forces you to become someone you’re not. It also shows a lack of confidence and trust in a relationship," said Judy, 34.

Bad personal hygiene: The only smells you want to encounter on your date are ones that involve food or cologne!

Bad sex: Expected to find this in the men’s list, didn’t you? Well, go figure. Apparently good sex is pretty important to some women, too.

Bigotry: “I wouldn’t date someone who made racial comments or who treated people according to their perceived social class rather than treating people equally,” said Sandra, 24.

Jealousy: Again, speaks to the possessive issue.

Infidelity: Regardless of gender, no one likes a cheater.
